The Best Jeans for Broad Shoulders and a Smaller Waist

A V-taper makes off-the-rack denim fit badly in a predictable way. Here is which cut to buy, what to have altered, and what to stop trying.

Folded denim in several washes

If your shoulders are noticeably wider than your waist, denim shopping has a specific failure mode: the jeans that fit your thighs gap at the back of the waist, and the ones that fit your waist cut into your legs. This is not a you problem. It is a grading problem.

Why off-the-rack denim fails a V-taper

Most jeans are graded from a single fit model, with the waist, seat and thigh scaling together as the size goes up. Bodies do not scale together. A build with a 42" chest and a 32" waist sits outside the ratio the pattern assumes, so something has to give.

Buy for the thigh, alter the waist

This is the whole strategy and it is worth the sentence twice: fit the part that cannot be altered, then alter the part that can. A waistband taken in two inches is a routine, cheap job. A thigh that is too narrow is scrap.

  • Mid to high rise — a low rise shortens an already-short-looking torso on a broad frame.
  • Straight or slim-straight through the leg, never skinny-tapered.
  • Rigid or lightly stretched denim; heavy stretch collapses against a muscular thigh.

What to tell the tailor

Ask for the waist taken in at the centre back seam, and ask them to keep the original topstitching thread colour. It costs nothing extra to request and it is the difference between an alteration nobody notices and one everybody does.

A note on the brands people ask about

We get asked for a shopping list here, and we mostly refuse to give one — the right pair depends on your actual measurements, not on a brand name. That said, athletic-fit lines exist specifically for this build and are the sensible starting point.

We keep a running list of athletic-fit denim that has worked for clients — some of those are affiliate links, which is disclosed on every one.

Frequently asked

What jean cut works best for broad shoulders?

A straight or slim-straight cut with a mid-to-high rise. It balances a wider upper body without clinging to the thigh, which is what makes slim-tapered jeans read badly on a V-taper build.

Should I size up in jeans if I have big thighs?

Size to the thigh and seat, then have the waist taken in. A waistband is one of the cheapest alterations there is; a thigh that is too tight cannot be fixed at all.

How much does it cost to take in a jean waist?

Typically £15–£30 depending on whether the belt loops have to be moved. It is the single highest-return alteration for anyone whose waist and seat are more than six inches apart.
